Penang Island  once known as Pearl of the Orient but lately known  as "The world heritage". The second most popular place on earth visited by tourist  around the world in 2010 after  New York City.

The place which was found by the British and developed few hundred years ago, was made an important Port at the Straits settlement By Sir Francis Light whom known as the founder of this Island.

The Peranakan,  Indian,  Malay and The Eastern culture has been  preserved here.

The very humble and simple place is, rich with the Asian culture, which is a mix of Indian ,Chinese and Malay that is only  available  here. One of the oldest Temple here is known as the "Temple of Goddess of Mercy" is believed to be built somewhere in 1804.

By early morning the China Town hawkers were busy starting their early morning bazaar of food stuff as well as clothes and vegetables and noodles.

Little India in another area which is famous for Indian food and culture. Spices, Indian Banana leaf Restaurants and Textiles sells all types of Indian stuff.

Penang is known as the Island of Nutmeg. If Kerala is famous for its coconuts and  spices, Penang Island is a place where, exotic fruits and nutmegs are preserved in syrup and these stuffs are available at the road side stalls and shops. Don't be  shock 9f you  hear all those funny names of the wild fruits that are preserved in syrup such as Kelubi, salak, kedondong, young mangoes, young papayas, sour grapes, cherries, nutmegs, apple manggoes and few other local fruits. If you are visiting Penang , Its a must to try all these preserved exotic fruits. Roasted Chesnut is another popular  nut available at roadside stalls.

Penang laksa and Nasi Kandar are  favourite delicacies which are available   at certain areas. Kueh teow is  flat rice  noodle which is  popular road side stall dish.    If you are a tourist, Penang free shuttle bus service is available at most of the time. Find out about it at the hotel counters or at the tourist information cent res. Its  free of charge and takes you around the  City and then to the Jetty.

During my two weeks stay here, What I learnt and observed about this place and its people is,  everyone seemed to be very busy especially the senior citizens. Most of them are above sixties.
The most hard working people whom I met were the Senior Citizens. They work day and night as bell boys and assistants at the coffeehouse and at room service sections. I was amazed with their capability of performing their task tirelessly. They posses very high self esteem and enthusiasm, which is difficult to notice  among the youth or the younger generations.
