Thaipusam : Festival of the world.

Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus around the Globe. Malaysia is the only destination in the world where this festival is celebrated in Grand scale. Hindus around the world gathered in Malaysia to celebrate this festival which falls in the month of Thai and in “Pusam” Natchathiram  ( star).

The foreigners, as far as from Australia, Indonesia, Thailand,Srilanka, India and from Europe come here to join in the celebration.
This celebration is mainly to cheer “Lord Subramaniam”in the month of Thai in Hindu Calendar.

In Malaysia, this festival is celebrated by all, even the non Hindus join in this celebration by helping in this festival. Milk pots and kavadis are carried on the head and shoulders by the devotees and walked  straight in to the cave where Lord Murugans shrine is located. Millions of devotees flood the area of Batu caves to fulfill their  vows on this particular day.

The young and old, as young as 2 years old and as old as 70 plus carries palkudam and the middle age and youths, carried huge colourfull kavadis decorated with peacock feathers. This was something beautiful and enlightened my heart which yearns and waited  for this moment for many years. Being one of the crowd during this years Thaipusam is an unforgettable experience.

The crowd and the human flood was like a stream, never ending, devotees were visiting non stop for several days. This year particularly I visited 3 times the  shrine on the top of the cave, probably it was a blessing for me this year to visit the Murugan temple several times in a week.

Malaysia is a country with diverse culture but the unity can be seen very clearly where the non Hindu staff were so dedicated especially the police  force and the health camp officers and arm force officers with the traffic police, day and night dedicated them selves in the service until the festival was over. The Police and security staff who were non Tamils and Hindus gave helping hand when they serve food for thousands of devotees. When ever cars were broke down the traffic police was there helping the drivers assisting and by pushing the cars aside. This was a truly Malaysian spirit which I noticed and observed during my visit to Batu Caves recently.
