Tamil School students fate change when they move to secondary school.
Primary Tamil students especially those in Tamil schools really taken good care by their Teachers and parents as long they are in primary, but when these kids moved to secondary School. No one bothers about them, including their parents.
My personal experience of Teaching in rural
primary and Secondary school has given me ample of sweet and bitter experience
of handling and dealing with these rural students and their parents. As long
they are in Primary the head and the class teachers , with the subject teachers
do their best to make the child to learn
and perform well in the exams. But once when The child enters or in secondary
school, parents neglect the child assuming the child has grown and can be on
their own.
The
basic need of the child is not fulfilled by the mother, either working mother
or home maker. Simple breakfast and simple meals are not prepared for the child
in the morning, the mother or father gives them one or two ringgit and ask them
to buy the food in the canteen. Such
parents are not educated and not stable in life matters of posses a stable job
or stable income.
When
a child goes to school with empty stomach , hardly the child can learn or can
absorb what the Teacher has taught them.
The good
students also tend to perform badly when they are hungry
My
personal experience as a student during my lower secondary years, I was left alone with my mom, who was
sick , younger sister and with two nieces to take care. When I was in form 3 my
principle , whose name is Mr. Baskaran arranged for the examination class
students and for the fatherless students free nutritious food during break,
that year.
With free food, I perform better in studies and when the form 3
examination results came out, I was one of the Top Tamil girl who scored good
grades. And when I was in form four, I was placed among the top scorers in the class. Most of my class mates from science stream changed class, to Arts
stream . But when in form 4 no one was there to prepare or to get breakfast or
meals for me, I went to school without
taking any meals but during recess bought simple cakes for 30 cents, which was
not filling at all. My performance in form 4 dropped due to helpless environment,
where both of my elder sisters were married and followed their husbands and my
eldest sisters babies were in my care with my mom.
It was a helpless and burdening situation, which caused my grades dropped and
I almost give up my studies, but my fourth brother was so concern about my
education and he encouraged me and advised me to move to my sister’s house and
stay there until exam over. With his assistance and by staying at my sisters’
place I managed to pass with credits in Form 5 examination which has helped me
to become a Teacher.
My lower Secondary Schools principle , Mr. Baskaran, later appointed as a Tamil Schools Organizer in Perak and retired in 1988. If at least Im a teacher and has a Position in life today, the gratitude goes to Mr. Baskaran who is an empathethic principle, who speaks good Tamil and good English. Though I have many siblings , yet a principles help has helped me alot to be in a good class, to mingle with the better students and to study in a good group of class students, with quality TEACHERS AS Subject teachers. Many teachers don’t reveal their good nature, only the students need to recall their Teachers sacrifices, when they ahve succeed in life.
